Every project here had something in the way of it.

A refusal, a flood zone, a demolition order, a budget that could not stretch. The constraint is usually the most interesting thing about a building, and on these six it is what gave each of them its plan.

Kestrel Ridge House

A family house on an exposed coastal ridge, planned around a sheltered courtyard so the sea can be lived with rather than merely looked at.

Fourteen homes on a former builders' yard, arranged around one shared courtyard rather than fourteen separate back gardens.

Foundry Yard

A speculative workspace building on the canal, designed for tenants who had not been found yet and could not be guessed at.

Salt House Pavilion

A seventy-cover restaurant on a shingle bank, built on screw piles so that it can be taken away again.

Ironmongers' Warehouse

An 1880s ironmongers' warehouse brought back into use as eleven studios, with the repairs left visible.

A 1937 Carnegie-model library restored, re-planned and reopened, after eight years of closure and a demolition proposal.
